Bullying and Sexual Harassment

December 2017

This letter is to inform you of the District’s ongoing efforts to prevent and respond to incidents of harassment and/or bullying.  The Jonathan Alder Board of Education is committed to providing a safe, positive, productive, and nurturing educational environment for all of our students.  Harassment, intimidation, or bullying toward a student, whether by other students, staff, or third parties, is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated.

As defined by board policy #5517.01:

Harassment, intimidation or bullying means any intentional written, verbal, electronic, or physical act that a student or group of students exhibits toward another particular student(s) more than once and the behavior both causes mental or physical harm to the other student(s) and is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating, threatening, or abusive educational environment for the other student(s).

We understand the importance of sustaining our anti-harassment and bullying prevention efforts through ongoing training and education of our students, administrators, teachers and classified staff.

Over the past several months the district has been reviewing and reinforcing our current anti-harassment/bullying policies and reporting procedures with the administrative team, school counselors and staff.  During our November 7th Professional Development Day, all of our teachers and bus drivers heard from Jim Bisenius, Child & Adolescent Therapist and National Bullying Expert, on how to stop social manipulation and student exclusion and bullying interventions without making things worse for the targeted students.

In addition, all of our students in grades K-12 have or will hear from Mr. Bisenius on Bully-Proofing Youth Techniques.  These age appropriate presentations provide some powerful insights to help students navigate difficult peer situations.

The Board designates the Student Services Director, Ms. Jennifer Korn, to serve as the "Anti-Harassment Compliance Officer" for the District. You may contact her at 614-873-8617 or jennifer.korn@japioneers.org.
