Jr high students at the ONU Pharmacy van

Story produced by Junior High students -- Luke Beachy, Samantha Harrison, Lacey Lovejoy, Griffin Keene, Sebastian McCabe.

This month, our 7th and 8th-grade Enriched ELA students got the opportunity to explore unique career ideas. The outlet? The ONU Mobile Pharmacy. Drs. Stuart Beatty and Jennifer Grundey braved the snowstorm to extend the education of students at Jonathan Alder Junior High School.

The purpose of the visit was not only to introduce students to careers in healthcare, research, and community service, but also to engage them in critical thinking about how data, science, and communication intersect to improve lives.

Through an interactive, hands-on experience, students had the opportunity to explore a mobile pharmacy truck and participate in a medicine scavenger hunt. They had the opportunity to see the supplies and machines pharmacists use to help patients in the mobile truck. Groups were able to be hands-on with the medicines pharmacists use in the clinic, and learned their purpose. Overall, they learned the importance of pharmacy and were given an excellent opportunity to experience what a typical day is like for a mobile pharmacist.

Experiences like the ONU Mobile Clinic visit demonstrate that literacy extends beyond novels and essays. This also gives our students the opportunity to get out of the classroom and learn something new. Evaluating evidence, analyzing multimedia presentations, and engaging in thoughtful discussion are skills that prepare students not only for high school but for life.

We are grateful to the ONU team for allowing us to learn more about how a blog/website is used in real life and also for taking the time out of their day to come and show us the mobile clinic. We were also so thankful for the opportunity to ask questions about the applications of the ONU Mobile Clinic and what they did with the clinic.
