student working on passion project

There's a buzz of creative energy in the air as 5th grade students embark on their ambitious Passion Pieces, a project where they create something that reflects their deepest interests and convictions. In art class, students are translating everything from favorite hobbies to global causes into vibrant, meaningful works of art.

The project encourages students to think both creatively and intentionally about their work, selecting colors and composition to amplify their personal themes.

For some students, the piece is a celebration of athleticism and personal style:

  • Lyla Tripp shared the inspiration for her vibrant drawing: "I drew it because I really like softball, and it's one of the three sports I play. Purple and blue are my favorite colors, so that's why I picked that color scheme."

  • Evelyn Beers, also a softball player, focused on color technique: "I did softballs because I play softball, and I wanted to do cool colors because I thought it would be interesting to do with the sky and ground transitioning to the grass."

Other students are using the assignment to explore artistic techniques and personal discovery:

  • Hazel Jones found her subject through practice: "I drew turtles because recently, I discovered that I really like drawing turtles. I did secondary colors because those are some of my favorite colors (orange, green, and purple)."

  • Evan Clay combined literature with color theory: "I did Harry Potter because the books are really good. I did complementary colors because it had the two colors I needed."

Perhaps the most impactful pieces are those that address major global issues. Lincoln Beachy used his artwork to highlight marine conservation:

  • "I'm passionate about saving the oceans because coral is dying, and I think that it is important to keep the animals and coral alive in the oceans. Coral is really important for the ocean because so many animals live there and need it to survive."

The Passion Pieces project is not only helping students hone their artistic skills but also giving them a chance to proudly showcase what truly matters to them.
