Fifth grade students at Canaan Middle School have been working incredibly hard on their Native American Culture Regions projects! This past week, students transitioned into the role of researchers, investigating how the specific environments of their assigned regions impacted the daily lives of the people who lived there. They specifically looked at how geography influenced food sources and clothing, while also reading about the various environmental challenges tribes faced and the ingenious solutions they created to survive and thrive.
During the week of January 26th, students will have the chance to move from research to creation as they work in class to build dioramas representing the environment and housing of their assigned regions. This hands-on phase allows students to use a variety of simple and creative materials to bring their learning to life. They will have the opportunity to transform everyday items—such as shoeboxes, twigs, fabric scraps, clay, and stones—into detailed replicas of historical landscapes and tribal shelters.
We are so proud of the effort the kids are putting into these projects and would love to share their progress with the community. On Monday, February 9th, from 5-7 pm, parents and families are invited to join us for a Native American Regions Showcase! Students will have their final trifolds and dioramas on display throughout the fifth grade classrooms. You are welcome to stop by anytime during the event to view and celebrate the kids' learning. Please note that this is an optional event, so student attendance is not mandatory. We look forward to seeing the amazing work our fifth graders have produced!
